First of all, I am more than happy to welcome you to this website! This is the first post on this new project of mine and if I’m being honest, it is a bit intimidating to stare at a blank screen ready to be filled with my thoughts, ideas, and my humble passion for pencils. Before getting into details, I feel like I owe you a little introduction.
So, hey! I’m Konrad, a business administration and IT student living in Munich, Germany, with a fascination for pencils (you probably wouldn’t have noticed). But let me explain: I think we all have had some kind of experience where we particularly liked some pen that ended up in our hands. Writing with a good pen on a fresh page has something empowering, but also, similarly to my experience with the blank screen, something very intimidating to it. I don’t want to get too philosophical about the process of writing, since that is an entirely different discussion, but I think you wouldn’t disagree when I say that writing can be a very haptic and fun experience.
In fact, when I think about the first “writing utensil” I really enjoyed, it was a ballpoint pen I borrowed (stole) from a friend when I was about 8 years old. It was nothing fancy, just a regular twistable ballpoint pen that had some branding on it. However, this particular pen just wrote incredibly smooth and had a satisfying weight to it. So I borrowed it… I am telling you this with a strong hope that you can relate and maybe remember a certain pen or writing experience you had that you really enjoyed.
During my years in high school, I developed strong opinions on the right choice of notebooks, folders, pens, and pencils. School was a chore, and by choosing stationery I loved, it was so much more fun. To make a statement (and you can quote me on this): Thin quad paper with lines that are printed tastelessly dark and with too much saturation should be banned. Anyways, with increasing interest for stationery, I, at some point, discovered fountain pens and the world of inks, which was both fun and way too expensive at the same time. To make a long story short: it was in 2016 when I graduated school and moved to Munich to pursue my studies at university, when I discovered pencils. I had simply forgotten about them and even started to dislike them. My brother gifted me a copy of the highly recommendable book “Stationery Fever: From Paper Clips to Pencils and Everything In Between.” The book prominently featured the Blackwing 602 and its history, which right away fascinated me. After getting my first pack of Blackwings, I was hooked immediately.
There is something very tactile and honest about writing with pencils. Pencils have been around for quite some time. Imagine all the inventions made using nothing but a pencil. Industrialization happened on the drawing board using plain old pencils. Pencils have always been around, have always been a reliable companion to our ideas and thoughts, and yet in today’s time, they are condemned to be associated with boring math problems. It took not long to discover the amazing erasable podcast (a podcast about pencils) and the connected erasable Facebook community. The community and the podcast fueled my passion for pencils even more, and I realized that I am not alone in my love for this humble writing utensil. That’s when I decided to start this project.
My goal is to share my love for pencils, to explore
their history, the different types and brands, and to showcase how versatile and fun they can be. I want to show you that pencils are not just for math class, but can be a great tool for writing, drawing, sketching and even for everyday tasks. I want to share my personal experiences, reviews, and comparisons of different pencils, and provide you with tips and tricks on how to use them. I hope you will enjoy reading my posts as much as I enjoy writing them. Thank you for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon!
