One thing I learned from my travels to the Scandinavian countries is that they share a ongoing historic rivalry. Back then these conflicts were fought using weapons in lethal wars. One example for this: (I manually counted!) Wikipedia lists about 21 wars between Denmark and Sweden. Despite all these victories and defeats, I propose there is a 22nd war that is still being fought. It is about pencils. We all know Sweden’s most popular contestant: the IKEA pencil. However, lately Denmark has beefed up its defenses by creating a mighty counterpart: the Viking Mini.
The Viking Mini comes in a handy form factor of 10 cm in length end to end. It has a matte black design with silver hot foiling. The core feels like a B grade. It writes smooth with a saturated stroke.
On the end Viking attached a rather standard eraser held in place by a black ferrule. It is nothing fancy or particularly special, but it works nicely. And here’s where I feel that Denmark has a clear advantage: A small pencil that has great manufacturing quality and design in a handy format. The eraser just makes sense in this form factor. I see wonderful applications for this pencil in any field use situation!
My verdict: the Viking Mini of Denmark is victorious.
